|RNature and climate:|N The archipelago consists of five bigger inhabited islands, the only ones with sweet water, and several smaller uninhabited.
All islands are volcanic. There are thousands of volcanocraters, of which some are still active. Highest point 1 707 m.a.s.l.
Dry and because of the cold Humboldtstream conditionally cool climate.
Average temperature along the coast during daytime 26 to 31°C and during nights 18 to 27°C.
The coastal areas have low percipitation and very few plants grow there, while the higher regions have perpetual green small trees and a percipitation of 1300 mm.
The islands have a very special flora and fauna, which was investigated by Charles Darwin in 1835 and played an important role when he formulated his theory of evolution.

|RHistory:|N The archipelago was discovered by Spaniards in 1535 and annexed by Ecuador in 1832.
It is a special territory within Ecuador and a national park with special international support.
